UNB, Dhaka :
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday said they will send their chairperson’s 13-point proposal on constituting and strengthening the Election Commission (EC) to the President.
Talking to reporters at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, he also said they have already sought a schedule to send the proposals to President Abdul Hamid.
“Khaleda Zia as a national leader presented the proposals. We think there’s no alternative to resolving the country’s political crisis except a free, fair and acceptable
election,” the BNP leader said.
Since the President is entrusted with the responsibility for constituting the Election Commission as per the constitution, he said, “We’ll surely send Khaleda Zia’s proposals to him. We’ve sought an appointment to meet him in this regard. We still didn’t get the appointment.”
Fakhrul hoped that the President will give them a scope to meet him and present the proposals. “We’re waiting for it.” On Friday, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at a city hotel presented the 13-point proposal for the formation of a new stronger Election Commission to hold credible elections saying that the next Commission must be constituted based on the consensus of all political parties.
She spelled out her party’s proposals as the incumbent Commission headed by Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad is set to complete its five-year tenure on February 8, 2017.
Mentioning that the President is for all, not for any particular party, he also hoped that Abdul Hamid will accept the proposals and take necessary steps to hold discussions on those.
Asked whether they will change their proposals if necessary, he said, “We’ve said it’s only a proposal and it can be a basis for discussions on the issue. We think a new scope has been created to restore democracy in the country through her proposals. The government should use it with sincerity.”
