Staff Reporter :
The BNP on Saturday said that if the government ignores its call to forge national unity against militancy, the party alone would do everything possible in this regard.
“We made a call to the government to form national unity to combat terrorism. If it (government) wants to ignore the proposal by imposing conditions, the BNP would do whatever is possible for the party to resist terrorism and extremism,” said BNP Standing Committee Member Nazrul Islam Khan.
When asked whether the BNP would break its ties with Jamaat-e-Islami, an ally of the 20-party alliance, he said that they would look into the matter after the talks for national unity would begin.
“Decision about Jamaat would be taken at the party forum,” the BNP senior leader said while addressing a press briefing at the party’s central office at Naya Paltan in the city on Saturday.
“Why you (journalists) do not question when the government was formed comprising ‘rajakars and autocrats?” Nazrul Islam Khan asked.
He said, the BNP Chairperson would announce the next course of action about the national unity. She would do it after exchanging views with people from different sections and professions.
Khan claimed that Khaleda Zia’s call for national unity has been appreciated both at home and abroad. But, he said, some government ministers and ruling party leaders are making blame-game against Khaleda Zia and the BNP.
He also said, only the law enforcers and administration could not resist terrorism and they would not be able to do it. He insisted that there is no alternative to national unity.
BNP Chairperson’s Adviser Advocate Ahmed Azam Khan, Joint-Secretary General Mojibur Rahman Sarwar, Khairul Kabir Khokan, and Organising Secretary Syed Emran Saleh Prince, among others, were present at the press conference.
