Gas crisis: BNP threatens shutdown

The party organised a rally and a human-chain demonstration in front of its office in the city on Saturday, claiming that the supply of gas is lower than the city needs.
In a speech during the demonstration, Chittagong BNP’s General Secretary Shahadat Hossain accused Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of ‘bluffing’ the citizens in the name of development.The citizens of Chittagong are ‘kept in the dark’ in every sector of development, he added.
Hossain claimed that the demand of gas in Chittagong is 500 million cbft, while the supply is only 230 million cft.Sylhet and Comilla have supplies of 260 million cbft and 370 million cbft of gas, respectively, he said.
“The industries and factories in Chittagong are on the verge of shutting down. The citizens are suffering immensely as there is no gas in households,” he said.
