Staff Reporter :
The BNP on Friday strongly criticised the government for dismal law and order situation in the country, and said that the government must work judiciously to protect life and security of people.
“The incidents of robbery, hooliganism, killing, sexual assaults on women and repression of children across the country have marked an alarming rise in last one month. This is an ominous sign,” said BNP’s International Affairs Secretary Dr Asaduzzaman Ripon.
The party’s current spokesman said it in a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office in the city. He called upon the government to take necessary initiatives to improve the law and order situation in order to safeguard people’s like and security.
Dr Ripon also urged the government to refrain from harassing and repressing the leaders and activists of the BNP and its allies by arresting them and implicating them in ‘false and fabricated’ cases.
He claimed that there are two kinds of law in the country. One is for the opposition leaders and workers, and another for the ruling party men. Relief and Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya still holds the office even after the apex court convicted him for corruption, he regretted.
Mentioning the comment of Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader who had said that the Eid-passengers would be safe in their journey, the BNP leader said that more than 100 passengers died in last seven days in series of road accidents across the country. Referring to the recent tragic road accidents in Gazipur and some other parts of the country, he said that the government couldn’t avert responsibility of the accidents. He alleged that the conditions of roads and highways across the country are in sorry state with cracks, potholes and ditches. “The government is spending thousands of crores of taka to repair the roads and the highways, but it doesn’t monitor the development work properly as it is busy to harass and repress opposition leaders and activists. The ruling party men are also busy to loot the money allocated for development of roads and highways,” he observed.
He appreciated the ruling party’s student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) for inviting BNP’s student wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leaders at its council to be held in the Suhrawardy Udyan on Saturday and Sunday.
The BNP spokesman urged the government to release JCD President Rajib Ahsan who was arrested a day after Eid-ul-Fitr in Patuakhali, enabling him to attend the BCL’s council. “Everything is possible for this government. We hope it will set Rajib free immediately. Rajib will join the BCL’s council if he is freed,” he said.
