As they’ re facing politically-motivated cases, they’re unable to join electioneering. Their supporters are also being obstructed and harassed by law enforcers,” said BNP international affairs secretary Asaduzzaman Ripon.Addressing a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, he also said though the Chief Election Commissioner has assured of taking measures to ensure a level-playing field, there is reflection of his promise on the field.”We hope the government and the Election Commission will help create a congenial atmosphere for hold the local government polls in a credible manner which will ultimately contribute to creating a ground for resolving the political crisis and conflict on the basis of a consensus in the future,” Ripon added. He said as the EC which has failed to regain voter’s confidence, it could not properly arrange a views-exchange programme with the contestants of Dhaka North City Corporation’s polls on Sunday.Even the ruling-party-backed candidates left the EC’s views-exchange programme without hearing the Chief Election Commissioner’s address, the BNP leader said adding, “It has demonstrated that the EC’s credibility has gone down to zero level.”He said, BNP hopes that the EC will be active to have its dignity and credibility restored as a constitutional body by playing a neutral role.
