UNB, Dhaka :
BNP on Sunday slammed Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad for his remark that the
fourth phase of the Union Parishad (UP) election was fair, saying his statements and activities sound like of a clown.
“The entire nation was stunned with the Chief Election Commissioner’s remark that Saturday’s UP polls were fair… he was an ex-high government official of the country. But, now his statements and activities have appeared
like that of a clown,” said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
Speaking at a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, he also alleged that the UP polls have been marred by huge casualties and violence as the CEC has indulged in anti-constitutional activities. On Saturday after the voting, the CEC said the elections to 703 UPs were held with massive turnout of voters. “The election was held amid much enthusiasm, except some stray and regretful incidents.”
Mentioning that eight people were killed in violence in the fourth phase of the UP polls, Rizvi questioned whether any person with sound mind can call it a fair election which held amid loss of many lives and bloodletting. “A total of 79 people have been killed in the four phases of the ongoing UP polls. But, it’s a little matter to Kazi Rakibuddin. Despite being the chief of a constitutional body, he has failed to perform his due duty,” he observed.
