UNB, Dhaka :
Hitting out at the ruling party for terming hollow its chairperson’s a 13-point proposal on formation of a stronger Election Commission (EC), BNP on Saturday said Awami League was predetermined to turn it down.
“The ruling party’s reaction language about our chairperson’s proposals indicates it prearranged one…they were ready beforehand to reject it to implement their blueprint,” said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
He came up with the comment while speaking at a discussion at Kochi Kachar Mela auditorium in the city arranged by Zia Nagorik Forum.
On Friday, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at a city hotel presented a 13-point proposal for the formation of a new stronger Election Commission (EC) to hold credible elections saying that the next Commission must be constituted based on the consensus of all political parties ahead of the 11th general election to be held in 2019.
She spelled out her party’s proposals as the incumbent Commission headed by
Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad is set to complete its five-year tenure on February 8, 2017.
Giving their party’s instant reaction, Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader said, “The so-called reform formulas placed by Begum Zia for the Election Commission are nothing but hollow and a mockery with the nation.”
Fakhrul said, the ruling party gave such a reaction as it knows it very well that it will not be able to return to power if a stronger EC is formed and a fair election is held.
He said, Awami League’s reaction also demonstrated the party’s attitude of hanging onto power by snatching people’s all rights and squeezing political space.
The BNP leader claimed that there are all elements in their chairperson’s proposals to restore democracy, people’s all basic rights and strengthen the country’s democratic process.
“Our chairperson has presented the proposals. She didn’t say her proposals will have to be implemented word by word. Let’s discuss the proposals and work out an acceptable way to hold a fair election,” he said. Fakhrul also asked BNP leaders and activists to drum up public support in favour of their chairperson’s proposals.
