The BNP in a letter on Friday demanded the Election Commission (EC)’s intervention in stopping the arrest and harassment of its leaders and activists.
It urged the EC to pursue the police to withdraw false and fictitious cases filed against the party men.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam sent the letter to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda.
The BNP leader also sent EC a list containing the names of the party’s 472 leaders and activists who had been arrested after the announcement of the 11th Parliament election schedule on November 8.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam told the Commission to take steps for the release of all the arrested leaders and activists of BNP and its alliance partners in the interests of democracy and election.
M Salahuddin Khan, an official of BNP’s Nayapaltan office, carried the letter to the Election Commission and handed it over to the EC official concerned in the morning.
Mirza Fakhrul alleged that hundreds of cases are being filed against BNP leaders and activists, and they are being arrested even after the announcement of the election schedule.
He said, “The law enforcers set up check-posts on different link roads around the BNP office defying the Commission’s order. The law enforcers are obstructing the nomination seekers from coming to BNP Nayapaltan office, even snatching nomination papers and damaging those.”
The BNP leader alleged that the police are arresting and harassing opposition leaders and activists.
Mirza Fakhrul said that their 60-70 leaders and workers were arrested on Wednesday. It does not end there, as the campaign to arrest the opposition leaders and workers is going on.
He said, “If such arrests and harassment continue, the credibility of the election will be no more. The law enforcers come under the jurisdiction of the Election Commission after the announcement of the election schedule. So, we expect your intervention to stop the filing of false and fictitious cases and the arrest of the party leaders and activists by law enforcers.”
