The BNP plans to launch its movement soon with the new city committees to restore election time non-partisan government.
The party has declared two of its Dhaka city committees partially on Tuesday with a view to strengthening its force in the capital, insiders said.
Senior leaders of the party said the tenure of the Awami League government is nearing to an end. Thus, an election atmosphere is gradually being created. So, it is high time to take preparation for movement to restore a non-political and neutral election time government in the country.
Meanwhile, the party high-ups also directed the new committees to form full-fledged committees with courageous, honest and young leaders aiming to start a strong movement in Dhaka city.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at a programme in the city expressed the hope that the new committees are capable
enough to forge strong movement against the government to fulfill the peoples’ desire of restoring democracy.
BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas told The New Nation yesterday, “The declared committees are fine. The newly elected leaders are capable to strengthening the movement to compel the government to step down.”
He said, “Our chairperson may consider those leaders who have sacrificed a lot in the new committees as it is due to form the full committees soon.”
“BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has directed us to make the party stronger from grassroots to city level to launch tougher movement to compel the government to accept our election time neutral government,” Habib-Un-Nabi Khan Sohel, the newly formed Dhaka South City Unit President told the New Nation yesterday.
Sohel has been made the President of Dhaka South unit while Kazi Abul Bashar the General Secretary of the unit. Besides, former ward councilor Abdul Qaium has been made President and Ahsanullah Hasan as General Secretary of Dhaka North City unit.
Presently, Abdul Qaium has been staying abroad as he is one of the accused of Italian national Casare Tavella killing case.
He said the party high-command has directed them to form full committees within one month.
Sources said, the two rival leaders BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas and Vice-Chairman Sadek Hossain Khoka led the Dhaka City unit of the party for about two decades. The two leaders were also elected mayors of undivided Dhaka City Corporation.
In 1996, Sadek Hossain Khoka became president of Dhaka city unit BNP. He also was made convener of the city unit on May 14 in 2011. Khoka was criticised inside the party because of his inactiveness during the party’s movement to stop the national polls on January 5 in 2014.
Mirza Abbas has taken the Dhaka city BNP’s convener on July 18 in 2014.
Meanwhile, party men in the city unit have shown mixed reaction after the declaration of the new committees. Dhaka south unit committee’s Vice-President Nabiullah Nabi declared that he will step down from the committee due to his physical illness and some other personal issues. While his supporters said that he desired the post of city unit’s general secretary.
Some of the leaders and activists of north Dhaka unit angrily reacted over declaring Abdul Qaium as its president. They said how can he lead the movement staying abroad?
Most of them said they wanted the Party Central Joint-Secretary General Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal as the party’s north unit president.
When contacted, Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal told The New Nation yesterday, “I have no interest to get a post in the city unit committee as I have been elected the party’s central Joint-Secretary General.”
He said, “I hope that the new committees will be able to make the party strong in the capital city.”
Meanwhile, Abdul Qaium told journalists that it does not matter where he is staying in this age of information technology, as he is always communicating with the party men.
