The BNP plans to hold an ever-biggest rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital on Sunday. They want to show their popularity by making the meeting a massive success with huge but spontaneous gatherings.
The party is holding the rally to mark the November 7, as the party’s ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day’.
The administration has finally given permission to BNP to hold the rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on Sunday, the party leaders said.
“For long there was no opposition BNP’s open political programme in the country. There was not even any open democratic gathering. In such a situation, BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is going to address a public meeting on Sunday. We hope huge numbers of people will join the rally to hear our leader,” BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas told The New Nation yesterday.
Mirza Abbas said, “The people of Bangladesh are deprived of any kind of political exercise for long. They want to get rid of this situation. So, they are responding spontaneously to attend the meeting which might make the gathering a memorable one.”
Sources said, the BNP high-ups directed the city leaders and its associate bodies to ensure presence of every leaders, activists and supporters to the venue of the rally.
The presidents and general secretaries of the BNP and associate bodies of adjacent districts like Gazipur, Narayanganj, Manikganj, Narsingdi and Munshiganj have also beern directed to take wide range preparations to gather the highest number of people in the rally.
When contacted, BNP Joint-Secretary General and Dhaka City (South) Unit President Habib-Un-Nabi Khan Sohel told The New Nation, “Our preparations are near to complete to make the rally a grand success. The wards and unit leaders have organised meetings several times for taking preparations of the rally.”
He said, “We have seen huge response from the common people for the rally. I think the rally will be a historic grand rally with participation of people of all walks of life.”
A senior leader of BNP said that the concern leaders of the capital city and its adjacent districts sat regularly for the past several days to take preparations for the Sunday’s rally.
He said it is BNP’s prestige concern to make the rally successful. Otherwise, it will give a negative message for the party. The government will also take it as a weapon of propaganda against the BNP. Thus the BNP does not want to give the ruling party such a chance.
Another party leader said, “We think our party chief may say some important things about the next elections at the rally. We are waiting for her directives for the next course of action. So, we must attend the meeting.”
