The BNP has planned to start a new phase of agitation as they think the people are with them by refusing their presence in polling stations in the recently held two city corporation polls.
The party wants to give a message of new agitation from Saturday’s rally, to be organised in front of its party’s Nayapaltan central office.
The BNP has called the rally on the occasion of the Party Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s two years in jail. The party also confirmed that it has got permission from the police.
Party sources said, the high command is under serious pressure from their grassroots leaders and activists to start a strong agitation to free its jailed Chairperson Khaleda Zia and also to ‘free democracy’. “The democracy is in vulnerable situation while people are refusing to franchise their voting rights to choice their representatives. In this situation, the BNP is taking preparation for agitation to free democracy from the grip of the current government,” BNP Standing Committee Member Dr Mosharraf Hossain told The New Nation on Friday.
He said that they are expecting huge gathering of party men and common people in Saturday’s rally in front of the party’s Nayapaltan office.
Dr Mosharraf said the party is engaged in movements to get back people’s voting right and restore human rights, which have been snatched by the government.
BNP Chief Khaleda Zia landed in jail on February 8 in 2018 in a graft case, which the party alleged as a political vengeance of the government.
BNP leaders, including its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, repeatedly said that the cases filed against Khaleda Zia have no merit. They claimed that all of the cases filed against their party chief are ‘baseless’ and ‘fabricated’. But the government denied the allegations.
The party men are worried about Khaleda Zia’s health condition. After urging repeatedly to release Khaleda Zia on the ground of her serious illness, the government denied it.
The Party sources further said that the high command of the BNP think that it is the right time to starts their new phase of agitation as it is staying away from any types of street movement for long. BNP Publicity Affairs Secretary Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anne told journalists on Friday that the DC of police Ramna Zone gave the party verbal permission to organise its Saturday’s rally.
However, DC Police of Motijheel Zone said they yet to have any information on the matter.
Whenever the relatives of Khaleda Zia describe about her serious sickness after meeting her in jail, the government said that she is not so sick.
“People are worried about the government’s ill motive about Khaleda Zia,” said Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
BNP Organising Secretary Shama Obaed told The New Nation on Friday, “People like our party men are worried about Khaleda Zia’s health condition. People love her and want to see her free.”
She said, “In addition, the government has snatched the people’s right to choice their representatives in different stages. In the recent two city polls, the voters ignored to franchise their voting power as they have lost interest due to widespread irregularities of the government in recent years.”
In this circumstance, Shama said, “People want the BNP to start movement to free Khaleda Zia and to free democracy.”
Some senior leaders of the party said that they think an agitation is a must to compel the government to free their party chief. They also think the party men are also ready to start the long awaiting agitation after there are issues like huge irregularities in the Dhaka’s two city polls held on February 1.
BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said that the party would throw a message from Saturday’s rally about the next phase of agitation.
He said this at a discussion meeting in the capital saying their party men are ready to take to the street soon.
