Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Wednesday nominated incumbent Sylhet mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury as the mayor candidate for the Sylhet city election, while the party-led alliance in a meeting later on the day agreed in principle to set a single candidate to contest the election.
BNP’s partners Jamaat-e-Islami and Khelafat Majlish expressed their willingness to nominate their candidates for the election.
BNP’s senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a news briefing at the party’s central office in Dhaka announced the name of Ariful Haque Chowdhury, also a central committee member of BNP, as the mayoral candidate.
Jamaat nominated Ehasanul Mahbub Zubair, its Sylhet unit amir, as mayor candidate for the election.
Zubair had started campaigning and publicity, an alliance leader said.
Jamaat’s central leader Abdul Halim said they had discussed the matter with BNP and would further discuss for settling about their candidate to set single candidate in Sylhet city, the meeting sources said.
Khelafat Majlish secretary general Ahmed Abdul Kader told New Age that he had talked to BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir about Khelafat Majlish mayor candidate in Sylhet.
The alliance meeting also discussed strategy to conduct campaign jointly for the mayor candidates in Rajshahi, Barisal and Sylhet cities, sources attended the meeting said.
The meeting held at BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office at 4:00pm that lasted about two hours also discussed about movement for release of the imprisoned leader Khaleda Zia.
It observed that they would carry out regular programmes and would continue legal battle for release of Khaleda.
Presided over BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir the meeting was attended, among others, by Syed Muhammad Ibrahim of Kalyan Party, Redwan Ahmed of Liberal Democratic Party, Fariduzzaman Farhad of National Peoples’ Party and Saifuddin Moni of Democratic League.
