The pro-BNP Jamaat’s Blue penal won ten posts including the positions of President, General Secretary and Treasurer while the pro-Awami League White penal begged 13 posts including the posts of Senior Vice President and Vice President in the Dhaka Bar Association election ended on Thursday.
Of the 23 posts of the association, Md Iqbal Hossain and Md Hossain Ali Khan (Hassan) have respectively won the positions of President and General Secretary of the biggest bar association of Asia while Md Mosharraf Hossain and Abdul Kader of the White penal won the posts of Senior Vice President and Vice President. From this penal AKM Habibur Rahman (Chunnu) has been elected Senior Assistant General Secretary, Sikder Mohammed Akhter-uzzaman (Himel) Assistant General Secretary, Md Ataur Rahman Khan (Rukoo) Library Secretary, Taslima Akter (Rita) Cultural Secretary, Mohammad Saiful Islam (Sumon) Sports Secretary, and Mohammad Khaledur Rahman was elected Social Welfare Secretary of the bar association.
HM Masum of the Blue penal won the post of Office Secretary while six others from this penal have been elected members of the executive committee of the association. They are- Azhaar Uddin (Ripon), Kazi Afruza Sultana (Eva), Md Abdul Baset Rakhi, Md Tanvir Hassan Shohel, Mohammad Yasin Mia and Shadekul Islam Bhuiyan (Jadu).
Besides, five of the White penal have been elected members and they are- AHM Shofiqul Islam Molla (Sohag), Md Mehedi Hasan Merin, Md Ramjan Ali Sarder (Rana), Mohammad Sabbir Hasan and Saiful Islam.
Of the 18,150 lawyer voters of the bar association, a total of 9,299 cast their votes during the two days’ voting that ended on Thursday at 5 pm, beginning on Wednesday at 9 am. The counting of the votes could not begin on Friday morning following the earlier decision of the election commission. Later, counting began at 9 pm on Friday and the result was announced on Saturday afternoon.
A total of 46 candidates from the both pro-Awami League White panel and pro-BNP Jamaat Blue vied in the election. Md Mosharraf Hossain of the White Panel contested for the post of President while Md Ahsan Tarik and Anisur Rahman of this penal vied for the positions of General Secretary and Treasurer from the White panel.
Senior Advocate Munsi Fakhrul Islam was the Chief Election Commissioner in the election.
In the election of 2019-2020, of the 25 posts, White panel got 18 including the positions of President and General Secretary, while Blue panel got nine posts including three secretarial posts.
