Apparently indicating BNP that the party was trying to burn all with the heartburn of its failure, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday said they would not be able to cause any harm to the country and its people.
“I promise, they (BNP) won’t be able to cause any harm by the grace of almighty Allah. They won’t be able to do anything (destructive),” she said.
She was addressing an Iftar and Doa Mahfil accorded to her by expatriates Bangladeshis living in the UK. UK Awami League organised the programme at the ballroom of Hotel Hilton on Park Lane.
The Prime Minister is now on a three-day official tour of the UK.
Hasina said, if any party boycotts an election with a plan to thwart it and ultimately fails to do so and even fails to wage a movement, then the responsibility cannot be shifted upon the common people of Bangladesh and on Awami League.
Chaired by UK AL President Sultan Mahmud Sharif, chairman of the home affairs select committee Keith Vaz MP, All European AL president Anil Das Gupta, Belgium AL President Rashid, UK AL organizing secretary Sajjad Miah, joint general secretary Naimuddin Nizam, London AL president Nurul Haque, among others, spoke at the Iftar party.
The Prime Minister said it is Awami League that restored democracy in the country and it would continue its fight to protect it. “The advancement of Bangladesh would continue as the country is moving ahead and continue to move.”
Sheikh Hasina also urged all to remain united against those who resorted to corruption, embezzled the funds of orphans, siphoned off money abroad and patronized militancy and terrorism.
Citing the execution of the Bangabandhu murder case verdict, Hasina said the verdicts of the war crimes trial are also coming out and being executed accordingly.
She said, had there been no ‘black day’ for the Bangali nation on August 15, Bangladesh could have been termed as a role model of development in global arena much ahead. “But, the August 15 had snatched that dignity from us leading the country to power changeover through killings, coups and conspiracies.”
The Prime Minister said, about 40 percent vote was cast in the January 5 national election through which Awami League has got people’s mandate. “For the first time in Bangladesh history, an elected government handed over power to another elected government. And the fact is that whenever AL assumes office, country’s people get something and their fates are changed.”
Hasina alleged that there was not misdeed left that the BNP-Jamaat did not commit to foil the January-5 election. “But people didn’t respond to their call as they had not forgotten the wounds they had suffered from 2001 to 2006 because of Hawa Bhaban that committed corruption and took commission. It was like a government within a government.”
Through the January-5 election, Hasina said, her government has got the chance to carry on the development works and hoped that her government would be able to accomplish what needs to be done in the rest of four and a half years’ time of its current tenure.
In this connection, the Prime Minister mentioned that the ADP implementation rate touched 95 percent in the last fiscal year despite the continuous hartal, arson and vandalism unleashed by the BNP-Jamaat to foil the last election.
Turning to the Padma Bridge issue, Hasina said the country’s people know who were behind the serious conspiracy over the project. “We earlier announced that we’ll start the work on the Padma Bridge project with our own fund and we’ve initiated the work.”
About her Tuesday’s meeting with British Prime Minister David Cameron at 10 Downing Street, the Prime Minister said the meeting was very fruitful and significant as the UK has assured Bangladesh of maintaining their continued support.
Hasina called upon the youth to move ahead imbued with the ideology of Awami League upholding the flag of her party as only Awami League wants the betterment and welfare of common people. “We’ve been working round the clock for ensuring the welfare of people.”
About SSC examination, she said its pass rate is hovering over 92 percent and she had directed the Education Minister to take steps to raise the rate to around 98 percent.
Highlighting various achievements of her party in various fields over the last five and a half years, the Prime Minister renewed her pledge to build Bangladesh imbued with the spirit of the war of liberation and thus build a hunger- and poverty-free ‘Sonar Bangla’ as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
She said that her government has been taking all necessary steps to tap the immense maritime resources of the Bay of Bengal for the betterment of the country’s people following the maritime boundary verdict over Myanmar and India.
Earlier, just before attending the Iftar, the Prime Minister inaugurated the website of UK unit of BCL through pressing a laptop button. UK BCL president Tamim Ahmed and General Secretary Shojib Bhuiyan were present on the occasion.
Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroze Chumki, renowned journalist Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury and PM’s Special Assistant Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap were also present at the dais.
