21st AL council: BNP, Oikya Front, others skip opening ceremony

Major political party BNP and its alliance Jatiya Oikya Front did not attend the 21st National Council of Awami League.
They skipped the first day session of the two-day council, which began at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka on Friday.
Central leadership will be elected in this two-day council of Awami League.
Awami League has invited all the political parties, who attended dialogue with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina just before the 14th national election, to attend the council.
Both the BNP and Jatiya Oikya Front, where BNP is a key ally, were invited by its arch-rival AL to
attend the session. Subrata Chowdhury, Gono Forum Executive President and also Steering Committee Member of Jatiya Oikya Front, said after holding a meeting, the front members decided not to attend the Awami League council considering the current political situation.
“Top leaders of the Oikya Front, including Dr Kamal Hossain and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, have decided not to attend the council,” he said.
Left Democratic Alliance’s (LDA) also did not attended the AL council.
A delegation of Jatiya Party (JaPa), led by Chairman Golam Mohammad Quader, attended the AL council at the Suhrawardy Udyan yesterday, confirmed Deputy Press Secretary Khandaker Delwar Jalali.
Jatiya Party Secretary General Mashiur Rahman Ranga, Presidium Member Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud, MP Kazi Firoz Rashid, MP Syed Abu Hossain Babla, and others attended the council.
Diplomats of different countries joined the opening session of the 21st national council of Awami League at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan.
While moderating the council, Awami League Publicity and Publication Secretary and Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud announced that diplomats of the USA, the UK, Japan, Germany, North Korea, India, South Korea, the EU, China, Vietnam, Iraq, Palestine and Thailand.
Representatives from the Democracy International and the Department for International Development (DFID) also joined the council, he said.
Dr Hasan Mahmud thanked the diplomats and representatives for joining the AL national council as guests.
Separate invitation cards were sent to four BNP leaders-BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee Members Dr. Khandoker Mosharraf Hossain, Barrister Moudud Ahmed, and Mirza Abbas-on the occasion, said Awami League Central Sub-committee member Ziauddin Ahmed Sipu.
Ziauddin himself handed over the invitation cards to BNP Assistant Information and Research Secretary Riaz Uddin Nasu at the BNP chairperson’s political office in the city’s Gulshan area.
Besides, Jatiya Party, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Workers Party of Bangladesh, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh, Gono Forum, Jatiya Ganatantrik League, Jatiya Party (JP), Samyabadi Dal, and all pro-Liberation War political parties have been invited to attend the council.
