BNP names 17-man full committee

Staff Reporter :The BNP has announced its much-awaited and much-talked full central committee after more than four and a half months of its national council held on March 19. The party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the committee on behalf of the party Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia on Saturday at the party’s Naya Paltan office.The names of 17 members of the 19-member national standing committee, 73 members of advisory council, 35 vice-chairmen of the national executive committee, seven joint- secretaries general, and other posts of the 502-member committee were read out to a group of reporters. The new standing committee members are Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Salahuddin Ahmed.The 14 others are Dr. Khondaker Mosharraf Hossain, Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar, Tariqul Islam, Lieutenant General (rtd) Mahbubur Rahman, Brigadier General (rtd) ASM Hannan Shah, MK Anwar, Rafiqul Islam Miah, Mirza Abbas, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Salahuddin Ahmed. Two posts of the standing committee still remain vacant. Not only that, the posts of youth affairs secretary, assistant youth affairs secretary, student affairs secretary and assistant students affairs secretary also remain unfilled. However, around 113 new have been were co-opted in the Executive Committee.The names of 40 leaders of the National Executive Committee including party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir were announced in three phases. Begum Sarwari Rahman and M Shamsul Islam have not been considered for the standing committee on health ground. Sarwari Rahman has, however, been made adviser of the BNP Chairperson. In the new standing committee list, the names of Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar, Tariqul Islam, Mirza Abbas, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy and Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah have been placed in the upper row ahead of Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan and Nazrul Islam Khan. Meanwhile, Abdullah Al Noman, Sadeque Hossain Khoka, Major (Retd) Hafizuddin Ahmed, Shah Moazzem Hossain, Mosaddeq Ali Falu, Amanullah Aman, Mizanur Rahman Minu, Joynal Abedin Faruk and Abdus Salam did not get their desired posts. Mosaddeq Ali Falu has already resigned from the party. Shamimur Rahman Shamim, the newly appointed associate publicity secretary, has also sent a letter to the party Chairperson requesting her to drop his name from the committee.Former joint-secretary general Amanullah Aman and former publicity secretary and opposition chief whip Joynal Abedin Faruk have been made Chairpersons advisers. The list shows many leaders including standing committee members Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Mirza Abbas, Ashifa Ashrafi Papiya, Vice-Chairmen Justice TH Khan, Mir Nasir, Abdul Awal Mintoo, International Affairs Secretary Nasir Uddin Ashim, Swechchhasevok Dal General Secretary Mir Sharafat Ali Sapu, Chairperon’s Adviser Harun-or Rashid Khan Munnu managed their family members and relatives in the committee. Earlier the party chairperson appointed Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir party’s Secretary General relieving him of the burden of holding the post as acting secretary general, made Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Senior Joint-Secretary General and Mizanur Rahman Sinha to continue as party’s treasurer in the first phase on March 30. The BNP announced names of seven joint secretaries and nine organising secretaries on April 10, and one organising secretary and 20 assistant organising secretaries on April 18.The sixth national council session of the party ended on March 19 without declaring new national executive committee and national standing committee and empowering party Chairperson Khaleda Zia to form the committees.The councillors had unanimously vested the authority in Khaleda at the main council session presided over by Khaleda Zia in the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh. Replying to a question, Mirza Alamgir termed the central committee vibrant one and hoped that it would play due role to restore democracy in the country.
