UP polls: BNP men went on hiding being threatened

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Jessore district unit in a press conference alleged that all the 11 BNP nominated chairman candidates and many more member candidates went on hiding before holding of union council elections under Jhikargachha upazila in Jessore having repeated threats on their lives and crops.  
Elections of union councils under Jhikargachha upazila were scheduled to be held on May 7. The press conference was held at Jessore Press Club on Monday noon.
‘Some candidates were wounded in attacks carried out by the ruling party men,’ BNP leaders said.
The leaders also told that the Awami League men confined Khorshed Alam, aspirant for the post of chairman of Jhikargachha union council on April 16. Member candidates Shahjahan Ali, Jamir Hossain and Madhu Member were wounded in attacks carried out by the Awami League men for which Jamir Hossain and Madhu Member were compelled to withdraw their candidatures. Monir Hossain, member candidate for Gadkhali was abducted by the Awami League men on April 17. The police rescued him later.
Mortoza Elahi Tipu, general secretary, Jhikargachha upazila unit BNP read out the written statement in the press conference in presence of Syed Saberul Haque Sabu, general secretary, Jessore district unit BNP, Delwar Hossain Khokon, organizing secretary and Munir Ahmed Siddiqui Bachchu, general secretary, Jessore town unit BNP.
