Police have picked up nine leaders and activists of local BNP, from their houses in different areas of Tongi ahead of Friday rally.
Of them three are Gazipur district unit Jubo Dal President Basir Uddin, 45, and activists Ijjat Ali, 55, and Roni Mia, 25.
BNP Joint-Secretary Dr Mazharul Alam said: “The police have raided the houses of senior leaders of the party on Thursday night and picked up some party members.”
He claimed that Pubail union unit Jubo Dal President Harun-ar-Rashid and Badre Alam College unit Chhatra Dal activists Alamgir and Shishir were among the detainees.
The local administration has also taken strict security measures in order to maintain law and order in and around the rally venue.
Five platoon police have been deployed there, Tongi police station duty officer Sajeda Lata told the journalists. She said, “We have arrested nine BNP men from different places of Tongi in a bid to avert any untoward situation during the mass gathering.”
“We are suspecting that the BNP men will conduct subversive activities ahead of their programme.”
However, she did not disclose the identities of the detained BNP men.
