A Dhaka court yesterday sent BNP leader Advocate Mokbul Hossain to the jail after three days’ remand in connection with the clash between the students of Dhaka College and the shopkeepers of New Market..
Magistrate Begum Ishrat Jahan of Dhaka CMM Court passed the order on Wednesday after police produced him in the court with plea to send him to the jail. However, the court fixed Thursday for hearing on the bail petition of Mokbul.
A Dhaka court remanded Mokbul for three day on April 23 after he was arrested from his home in Dhanmondi area on April 22.
Morsalin, 26, an employee of a shop in New Marker, succumbed to his injuries at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital on April 21. Earlier, on Tuesday night (April 19) injured Nahid Hasan, an employee of a courier service at the Bata Signal area of Elephant Road, died also in the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Meanwhile, the High Court on Tuesday granted six-week anticipatory bail to 14 leaders and activists of the BNP in a case filed over the clashes between shopkeepers and Dhaka College students last Tuesday.
In a case filed by the police on 20 August, 24 BNP activists were accused of conspiracy, vandalism, arson, and obstructing law enforcers from discharging duties during the clash.
So far, police arrested Mokbul Hossain, former President of New Market unit BNP, and accused him of being the main conspirator behind the violence.
The conflict allegedly stemmed from a feud between two food stores, in which, a few Dhaka College students got tangled late Monday night (April 18). The altercation boiled into violence, turning the bustling shopping area into a battleground for most of the day. Mokbul owns both the food stores. However, it has been learnt that he himself is not doing any business there.
