Court Correspondent :
BNP leader and former mayor candidate of Dhaka South City Corporation, Ishraque Hossain, was yesterday sent to the jail. Earlier, Dhaka CMM Court rejected his bail petition in an arson case filed with Motijheel Police Station in November 2020.
Magistrate Tamanna Farah of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka passed the order after Motijheel police produced Ishraque Hossain in the court with a report in which police appealed to confine him in the jail.
The prosecution alleged that a group of leaders led by Ishraque gathered in front of Bangladesh Bank Colony to carry out alleged subversive activities in the Motijheel area on November 12, 2020. Later a case under the Special Powers Act 1974 was filed against Ishraque and 31 others with Motijheel Police Station. After the case, Ishraque surrendered in the High Court Division on December 20, 2020 seeking anticipatory bail. After hearing, the High Court Division granted him bail till January 5 last year. The apex also directed him to surrender in the lower court before expiry of the period.
Following the court order, Ishraque surrendered in the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court on January 4, last year seeking bail in the case.
Judge KM Emrul Kayesh granted him bail and fixed August 18 last year for full hearing on the issue.
But Ishraque Hossain did not appear in the court during the hearing on the bail petition while the court cancelled his bail and directed the CMM Court of Dhaka to issue arrest warrant against him.
Receiving the court order, Metropolitan Magistrate Arafatul Rakib on January 2 this year issued arrest warrant against Ishraque Hossain.
Sujan Mahmud, Ishraque’s personal secretary, said police picked Ishraque Hossain yesterday (Wednesday) when he was distributing leaflets about price hike of daily essential commodities.
Ishraque Hossain, son of late BNP leader and former mayor of Dhaka City Corporation Sadek Hossain Khoka, was arrested at about 11 am on Wednesday, from the city’s Motijheel area, said Deputy Commissioner (Motijheel Division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Md Abdul Ahad.
Police also said they arrested Ishraque, a former mayor candidate of DSCC, as he was wanted in the case.
