Two persons, including a BNP leader, were shot dead at Notunhat of Fultala upazila in Khulna district on Thursday night, Police and local people said.
Alauddin Mithu, 45, Organizing Secretary of Khulna district unit BNP and his body guard Nowsher Ali, 42, were shot dead by unidentified miscreants when they were staying at Mithu’s business office.
Police and locals said that Mithu’s father-in-law Syed Fazlul Alam Selim, 56, and another body guard Siraj Morol,
51, also suffered bullet injuries in the attack.
Riding on two motorcycles, a gang of terrorists numbering about five to six swooped on the business establishment of the BNP leader at Fultala Natunhat, adjacent to his residence around 10.15.pm.
Introducing themselves as members of the Detective Branch (DB) of Police, the terrorists stormed into the office of Mithu Enterprise and started firing targeting Mithu and his gunmen.
Mithu was on the spot while his gunman Nowsher Ali succumbed to his injuries at midnight in the Khulna Medical College and Hospital (KMCH). Injured Selim and Siraj were rushed to local health complex and later to Khulna Medical Colloge and Hospital.
Officer-in-Charge of Fultala Police Station Asaduzzaman Munshi said, the criminals entered Mithu’s office after killing his bodyguard Nowsher. Then, they shot Mithu and his other gunman Siraj at point blank.
On August 18 in 1998, terrorists at Fultala UNO Office gunned down Mithu’s father Sarder Alauddin, ex-Chairman of Damodar Union Parishad. Terrorists also gunned down his elder brother Abu Sayeed Badal on August 16, 2010. Earlier, on March 6 in 2010, some miscreants hurled bombs targeting Sardar Alauddin Mithu, of course, he survived that bomb attack.
Police could not arrest any person involved in this connection till filing of this report at about 3.25 pm on Friday.
BNP leaders of both Khulna city and district units condoled the death and demanded justice. Khulna City Unit President Md. Nazrul Islam Monju mourned the death of Alauddin Mithu and demanded arrest of the killers immediately.
