A local BNP leader was shown arrested early Sunday in a case filed in connection with the crude bomb attack on a party mayor candidate Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul’s rally in Rajshahi.
Law enforcers picked up Motiur Rahman Montu, general secretary of Rajshahi district unit of BNP from his residence around 1:30am, said Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner AKM Hafiz Akhter while addressing a ‘Meet the Press’ event at RMP headquarters yesterday.
The arrest came after an audio clip of his conversation with another leader on the crude bomb blasts, the commissioner claimed.
According to RMP Assistant Commissioner Iftekhayer Alam, the audio clip is said to be of conversation between Montu and BNP central leader Taiful Islam Tipu.
In the audio clip, Montu was heard telling Natore-based BNP central leader Taiful Islam Tipu that the crude bomb blasts at the BNP rally on July 17 was carried out by BNP’s organizing secretary Ruhul Kuddus Talukder Dulu to please the party’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman, stated Assistant Commissioner Alam.
The audio clip was leaked on a Facebook group ‘Agami er Rajshashi’ after which it went viral.
According to the audio, Montu claimed that Dulu and another Rajshahi BNP leader Shaheen Shawkat were allegedly responsible for the attack.
On the other hand, Taiful Islam Tipu said they were unaware of the audio clip. “We are looking into the matter.”
On whether he spoke to Montu over the bomb attack, Tipu said he can not recall if they had any conversation regarding the issue.
Following the July 17 incident, the Boalia Police Station filed a case accusing eight unnamed people.
BNP filed a complaint with the Election Commission over the attack accusing the Awami League.
However, Awami League mayoral candidate AHM Khairuzzaman Liton said BNP carried out the attack in the party’s rally.
At a press conference on July 17, Liton claimed that BNP Organizing Secretary Ruhul Kuddus Dulu had carried out the bomb attack at the direction of Tarique Rahman, who is currently staying in the UK.
