The BNP and the Jatiya party are in image crisis due to disunity, indiscipline and inactivity among the grassroots level leaders and activists. The two parties’ setback in the ongoing UP polls has shaken their politics also, sources said.
The senior leaders of the parties said, the grassroots level leaders and activists have become frustrated which has worried the two parties’ top ranking leaders, who are, however, analyzing the overall situations to heal the wounds.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) faces mountain of cases against their roots level leaders and activists all over the
country. Police sued large number cases against the party men across the country. As a result, many BNP leaders and the activists were imprisoned and many went hiding. Consequently, they could not campaign for the candidates in the UP election.
Besides, whenever some others tried to canvass in favour of their candidates, they were intimidated, beaten, arrested and sent to jail.
Replying to a question in this regard, BNP Joint-Secretary General Muhammad Shahjahan told The New Nation, `Some leaders have sent some allegations against the relevant leaders to form pocket committees. They are small in numbers. BNP will overcome the current stalemate soon.
He alleged that the government has sued thousands of false cases against the party men nationwide. The cases have created obstacles on the way of grassroots level restructuring and local polls campaigns to favor the party candidates.
The Jatiyo Party has also falled in vulnerable situations at the grassroots level. The party won only four UP chairman posts out of 612 UPs in the first phase and only three only out of 628 held in the second phase.
The party won one mayor post only out of 234 municipalities across the country. The Party Chairman former President Hussain Muhammad Ershad said in a meeting of his party that it was shameful for him to win only one municipal mayor post.
The ruling party also faces charges of extortions, grabbing of land, unrest in the educational institutions and vote rigging in the local bodies’ polls by their men.
The Awami league Joint-General Secretary Dr. Dipu Moni told The New Nation that the party was trying to overcome the adverse situation and we are optimistic of success. Directions have been given to the upazila and the union level leaders to resolve all their disputes in order to restore unity in the organization.
