The BNP has expressed its happiness about the public response during the party’s election campaigns of Dhaka’s two city corporations scheduled to take place today (Saturday). However, the party men are worried over the polls day’s environment.
“We are very happy that the voters and common people are widely showed their utmost support to the BNP during the election campaigning in last couple of days. If the people can franchise their voting rights, two of our mayor candidates and most of the party’s councillor aspirants will win,” BNP Standing Committee Member Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain told The New Nation on Friday.
He said, the voters from every area of Dhaka’s south and north city corporations want to vote for BNP’s candidates which was close observation.
BNP candidate Tabith Awal is contending for the mayor
post in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) against AL candidate Atiqul Islam.
Besides, its candidate Engineer Ishraque Hossain is in voting fight in the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) against AL candidate Barrister Fajle Noor Tapash.
The party leaders asked the leaders and activists to go to the polling centers and cast their votes in favour of the BNP candidate. They also directed the candidates and their agents to stay in election until the result is announced at any cost. BNP insiders said that the party leaders see benefit over participating in the city polls, though they are not hopeful about the result due to ‘the ruling party’s aggressive activities and the Election Commission’s partisan mentality to the government.
They said that the EC failed to give heed of their anxiety over Electronic Voting Machine (EVM), which showed their partisan mentality to the ruling party.
BNP leaders including its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir several times asked the EC to stop using EVM in this vote but the EC rejected that plea.
They alleged that the EVM could be used to favour AL’s candidates.
Meanwhile the EC denied the allegation saying that the EVM could not be misused.
The BNP leaders said, AL’s muscle men have attacked Tabith Awal and Isharque Hossain but the EC have not taken any measures in this regard.
Besides, the leaders alleged that police have arrested a number of leaders and activists across the capital city since Tuesday. BNP’s Organising Secretary Shama Obaed said, police have arrested the party leaders who are supposed to be polling agents of mayor and councillor candidates of the party. Party sources said, in these circumstances, they are not totally optimistic over winning the polls.
But, they have seen benefits on participating the polls as their party leaders and activists have a chance to join procession without police barriers in last days in electioneering.
They said police and ruling party men barred the party men to bring any procession for long as the BNP is out of power since 2007.
Dr. Mosharraf Hossain claimed that people are seriously angry to the Awami League government as their oppressions have exceeded all the limits.
The BNP leaders accused that people from all walks of life are showed their anger to the incumbent government for the price hike of commoditial commodities, wide scale extortion by muscle men by the ruling party and law enforcers, and for social-economic discriminations.
Meanwhile BNP’s DSCC mayor aspirant Ishraque Hossain in a letter to Editors of print and electronic media’s expressed his anxiety over Election Commission’s inactive role on their complaints against the ruling party’s widespread irregularities.
He asked the Editors to send numbers of journalists and media workers to voting centers so that they can observe the real scenario of the polls’ day.
