The BNP on Thursday called for united movement of all political parties for holding the next national elections under a neutral government.
“I requested all political parties, let us be consensus in common question, that the next national elections must be hold under a neutral government to restore democracy,” BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said this while addressing a protest meeting at the National Press Club in the city.
The protest meeting was organised by Association of Engineers Bangladesh (AEB), a platform pro-BNP engineers, for demanding the release of jailed BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and holding a neutral general election.
Mirza Fakhrul said, “Definitely question arises among public mind about the political parties’ different stance on the issue of forging national unity for an election time neutral government. The people want to know why the parties now could not reach to a consensus over the issue.”
In 2014, all opposition political parties had agreed not to contest the national election under political government, he added.
The BNP leader said, “The parties were agreed on the provision of poll-time non-party neutral government scrapped from the Constitution. Now that situation still prevails in more serious shape.”
He said that popular uprising will free Khaleda Zia from jail, claiming she was victim of false cases.
Mirza Fakhrul also said that there is no benefit to stage agitations in separate issues like the recent students movement on quota reformation.
“Isolated agitations for rights of any class or group like the quota reformation movement would not bring any benefit if movement for democracy has not taken place,” he said.
He said, “The Prime Minister announced the cancellation of the quota system which she could not do as it is protected by the Constitution. The students also did not want to cancellation. The gazette notification also yet to be issued.”
On the other hand, cases were filed against the protestors in the name of unknown people while demonstrators were being picked up by plainclothesmen in blindfolded, Mirza Fakhrul added.
AEB President Mahmudur Rahman presided over the meeting.
BNP Vice-Chairman Professor Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain, Journalist leader Ruhul Amin Gazi and Engineer leader ANH Akhter Hossain, among others, spoke at the meeting.
