The new warship of Bangladesh Navy, procured from the USA, named “BNS Somudra Avijan” reached at Chittagong naval jetty yesterday.The USA coastguard handed over the ship to Bangladesh Navy formally on May 5 this year, an ISPR press release said here yesterday.The Bangladesh Navy welcomed the new member of its fleet with its traditional ceremony that was attended by Commander Chittagong Naval Area Rear Admiral Akhtar Habib.The high-powered curter ship was commissioned under the USA coastguard on November 16 in 1968.In February 3, 2015, the USA coastguard decommissioned the ship. The 115 meters long and 13 meters width ship with speed of 29 nautical miles is included in the 9th frigate squadron of Bangladesh Navy.Twenty-one officers and 157 sailors of Bangladesh Navy went to the USA in different phase and received practical training about different features of the ship.After receiving the training, Captain M Wasim Maksud sailed the Somudra Avijan from the USA on October 11, 2015 and reached in Chittagong after stopping over in Malaysia and the Philippines.
