Accusing the ruling party of making bloodletting as its political manifesto, BNP on Saturday alleged that the government has chosen killings and forced disappearances as the path to face stormy politics.
“It’s pointless to spread the message of peace among those who have made bloodletting their political manifesto. They (govt), after having been isolated from people, now think killings and enforced disappearances as the only solution to turbulent politics,” said BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Addressing a press conference, he also said the government is not finding any other alternative to enforced disappearance to perpetuate its power.
The BNP-led 20-party arranged the press meet protesting the government’s decision of not allowing it to hold its scheduled human chain programme in the city yesterday which they had called protesting the disappearances of its leaders and activists.
Criticising the government for denying the permission, Fakhrul said now it has become the policy of the government not to allow any other party to hold their programmes on a day when the ruling party has its own programme.
He said, they had wanted to form the human chain on the occasion of the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearance to create awareness among people about enforced disappearance.
The BNP leader claimed that the current regime has killed their around 310 leaders and activists in the last one year and made disappeared 25 people during the period.
Making people disappeared is the utter violation of human rights, Fakhrul said adding that Awami League has been carrying out it since it assumed office in 2009.
“The government is resorting to enforced disappearances as it thinks it will be able to hang onto power if it can make disappeared opposition men and conscious citizens who are vocal against unjust and misrule,” he observed.
Terming the government illegal, Fakhrul said it has destroyed all the democratic institutions. “They (govt) have also made disappeared voting, parliament, the rule of law and finally the freedom of press, alongside making the opposition men disappeared.”
He said, a grand festival of Awami misrule is going on as the government has destroyed the rule of law by making the law-enforcement agencies as the ruling party’s associate bodies through naked politicisation. “The only responsibility of the Bangladesh Police is to provide security to the Prime Minister, ministers and ruling party leaders and activists.”
The BNP spokesman warned that no autocratic regime could continue its repression on people forever as they all had to go and face dire consequences.
