Blockade hits tourism business in Bandarban

The small and medium size tourism business centres developed in different hilly areas are severely affected due to hartal, blockade and violent political activities.
The operations in hotels, motels and resorts established over the time on different layers of hilly vicinities look deserted in absence of visitors due to on-going unsafe environment.
According to market sources, the tourist business community in Banderban incurred serious losses under the same unworthy situation prevailed this time last year. Many owners engaged in tourism-based business made new investment to cover up the losses; but they are again frustrated in view of undesirable environment causing severe losses, the sources added.
While paying spot survey to tourist areas of the district, this correspondent found many hotels and motels like Nolachal, Meghla, Buddah Jadi, RamJadi, Prantic and many others closed. Asis Das, manager of Greenhill Hotel, gave a gloomy picture of their business, saying that presently there is no guest, and all room bookings have been cancelled. With a frustrating voice, Zakir Hossain, proprietor of Meghla Holiday Inn Resort, told this correspondent that tourists cancelled their bookings due to undergoing violent political stalemate; the situation compelled the owners to allow forced leave to employees.
On the other hand, a number of restaurants at different places of the town have been closed, Shahadat ur Rahman, Managing Director of Feast Restaurant, reported it. The continued unhealthy business environment prevailing during the last two years forced the owners to shut down the business establishment.
The striking feature is that a large number of workforce engaged in more than 100 running hotels, motels and resorts have been subject to unemployment under the situation.
If this political instability continues for further period, tourism-based business establishments will be trapped into mounting problems, he maintained.
Nejarat Deputy Collector Hussain Mohammad Al Mujahid viewed that Nilachal and Megola operated by district administration generally run with full house during pick season; but at this disturbed days, any guest is hardly seen.
 The sale of tickets worth Tk 1 lakh being the normal turnover during rush months is now at the lowest ebb, he continued.
