Court Correspondent :
The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka on Thursday sentenced Salauddin Shoib Chowdhury, the editor of English weekly, the Blitz to four years’ imprisonment with a fine of Tk 10,000 in a case filed for fraud.
Magistrate Molla Saiful Alam pronounced the verdict in presence of the convict. The judgement also says if Shoib Chowdhury fails to pay the fine he will suffer another six months in the prison. However, the convict’s wife Shahnaj Chowdhury, the other accused in the case, was acquitted, as the allegations against her were not proved.
The case statement says, the complainant of the case, Sajjad Hossain, Chairman of private organization, Bangladesh Center for International Studies, and Shoib-Shahnaj couple were good friends. Shahnaj herself had conducted a business firm, ‘Shine Trade’ by name.
Shahnaj and Sajjad entered into a contact and following it both of them were supposed to invest Tk 70 lakh each. Accordingly, the complainant Sajjad deposited Tk 70 lakh in the joint account but Shahnaj remained indifferent about it. Rather, she withdrew Tk 69 lakh from the joint account on two dates in connivance with her husband Shoib.
Earlier, on January 9, last year, Shoib Chowdhury was imprisoned for seven years in another case filed for sedition in connection with a controversial article.
