Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) Saturday launched Global Buyers’ Information Directory (GBID) for the entrepreneurs to boost country’s knitwear export.
The detailed information of more than 25,000 buyers of 160 countries across the globe has been accumulated at the directory of nearly 2100 pages for the first time in the country.
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed unveiled the GBID as chief guest at a ceremony in a city hotel, where State Minister for labour and Employment Mujibul Haque Chunnu and Shamim Osman, MP, were present as special guests.
Terming the buyers directory as a brilliant work, Tofail Ahmed said it would help the new entrepreneurs to catch buyers at different destinations.
Referring to the Sixth Five Year Plan, the commerce minister said the development document of the country has insisted on exploring new markets along with diversification of export products, which has helped bag export earnings of US$ 4 billion from the non-traditional products.
He claimed the people who want to spread labour unrest in country’s RMG sector are not labourers. “They (the labour leaders) carry-out propaganda to the foreigners against the country’s RMG sector. . . actually they are serving the companies and countries who are competitors of our country in international market,” added the commerce minister.
About the trade union, Tofail said some countries, especially United States strongly advocated for trade union at all RMG factories, but the fact is that all the factories in their countries do not have trade unions.
The commerce minister assured of solving the problems existing in country’s knitwear industry as soon as possible.
Speaking as special guest, Mujibul Haque Chunnu said if we could overcome the negative propaganda campaign against Bangladesh, the target of export earning of US$ 50 billion by 2021 is not impossible.
He said the government is working to minimize the mistrust between the factory owners and labourers. “We don’t have to lag behind, if we could establish pleasant relation among the owners and labourers,” added the state minister.
He also said necessary measures would be taken to build labour office and hospital at Chashara in Narayanganj as per the demand of BKMEA.
Shamim Osman said like other organization, BKMEA is not discussed much as there is no labour unrest and other incidents in the factories of BKMEA.
He hoped the buyers’ directory would help the new entrepreneurs.
BKMEA President Selim Osman, MP, said the government has provided electricity as per their necessity, but lack of gas supply is hampering their production. “We could not run 40 per cent of production due to gas crisis . . . if the supply of gas is not possible, we need subsidy on diesel to run cent per cent production, which enable us to double the expand the export volume by 2016,” he added.
Selim said BKMEA is working to develop another 1000 of new entrepreneurs although it has currently over 2000 member and all are export oriented.
