BIWTA won’t allow overloading passengers on roof of vessels

Officials of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority on Wednesday noon in a meeting with the representatives of launch owners, workers associations, law enforcing agencies, shipping and administration said that BIWTA will not allow carrying passengers on roof-top of the vessels.
The meeting was called at conference room of Barisal Port building to discuss about ensuring safety for the Eid special vessels and passengers.
Abul Bashar Majumdar, BIWTA deputy director for river safety and traffic, presided over the programme attended among others by Shahjal Hauque, deputy director, M. Mustafizur Rahman, port officer of BIWTA, Akkas Hossain, Abdur Rahim, and leaders of launch owners association, officials of launch labour association, shipping directorate, and law enforcing agencies.
In the meeting BIWTA and shipping directorate officials asked the water transport owners not to overload passengers on roof-top of the vessel.
If any passenger found on the roof of the launch, then punitive action would be taken against the launch authority including cancellation of certificate of the vessel-captain and suspension of the route permit, the BIWTA and shipping officials cautioned.
The owners also asked to preserve updated documents about route permit, fitness and survey certificate of the vessel, running vessels with sufficient safety equipments like buoys, life boats, fire extinguisher, operating vessels by licensed, trained, uniform-wearing manpower, carrying passenger and goods within the limitations of capacity to ensure safety and security of the passengers and vessels, Abul Bashar Majumdar said.
On the other hand a coordination meeting called by district administration about Eid passenger held at conference room of the deputy commissioners Barisal also held on the same noon with D. Gazi Md. Sayfuzzaman, DC Barisal in the chair.
The meeting was addressed among others by Murad Ahmed, journalist, SM Iqbal, Mohiuddin Manik Bir Protik, passengers, Aftab Hosen, road transport owners’ association leader, officials of BIWTA, lunch owners and workers associations, law enforcing agencies and others.
The meeting decided monitoring road, water transport stations, terminals, and ghats to control all types of passenger harassment.
DC Barisal asked BIWTA officials to set up marking light and points in the river, ensuring smooth navigability of the routes, and ensuring safety and security of the Eid-passengers.
DC ordered road transport drivers not to use mobile phone during driving and operate the transports with trained manpower and following traffic rules.
