BIWTA blamed for double standard policy

Staff Reporter :
The owners of Fairy Shipping Lines Ltd have alleged that Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Agency (BIWTA) played a double standard policy in distributing timetable to ply launches from Sadarghat Launch Terminal.
They also alleged that some officials of the BIWTA give extra facilities to several launches for unknown reason.
Sources said eight launches are plying on the Dhaka-Betua route every day. They are Tasrif- 3 and Tasrif- 4, Farhan- 2,
Farhan- 5, Farhan- 6, Tipu- 4, Kornafuli- 12 and Kornafuli- 13.
The schedule time to start the journey from Dhaka for Tasrif launches is at 8:30pm. The Tasrif launch authorities have been demanding to reschedule their journey time at 8:00pm instead of 8:30pm. But the BIWTA did not accept their demand even after submission of several applications.
Recently, the owners of the Kornafuli- 12 and Kornafuli- 13 applied to BIWTA for rescheduling their times. The BIWTA gave permission to them without any delay.
Director of Fairy Shipping Lines Ltd Md Kamaruzzaman said, “The BIWTA rejected our applications for reschedule. On the other side, they approved the wish of others, which is unexpected. It is just a double standard policy.”
Meanwhile, the owners of Fairy Shipping Lines Ltd filed a writ petition with High Court Division seeking justice. The HC on October 4 ordered the BIWTA to postpone their reschedule time, which was given to Kornafuli- 12 and Kornafuli- 13.
The HC also directed the BIWTA to issue fresh timetable of the vessels on the route following the Inland Water Transport (Time and Fare Table Approval) rules.
The court also asked the BIWTA to consider all the applications filed in this regard.
But the BIWTA is yet to issue the fresh timetable and it did not postpone the timetable given to Kornafuli- 12 and Kornafuli- 13.
Abu Zafor Hawladar, BIWTA Naval Security and Traffic Management Department Director, told The New Nation that they have been working to make a fresh timetable following the HC’s direction.
“Our work is in progress. Hopefully, we will submit report to the Court soon,” he said.
