BITA calls for tobacco-free Port City

Smoking of tobacco is the prime reasons for unprotectable deaths . According to world statistics , one smoker out of 10 adults is dying per day across the world means every year 54 lakh people are dying every year due to tobacco smoking.
To imbue the people of the society, BITA introduces an exceptional songs performance popularly known as KabiGaan (contesting songs between two poets) in city slums . Poetic singers Ratan Barua and Kabial Yousuf are rendering the Kabi Gaan in the city areas with the cooperations of CTFK as arranged by Bangladesh Institute of Theatre Arts to imbue the citizens against tobacco and its result through songs . In the inauguration ceremony of Cultural publicity by BITA recently , City Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin as Chief Guest reiterated his pledge to declare the public places as tobacco-free zones. To accelerate the pledge of the city Mayor, BITA launched the programmes in the city through different means including Kabi Gaan .
With its continuation, BITA is working in 41 city wards and arranging 82 local folk songs(Kabigaan) under these wards in phases. In the meantime, 64 folk songs programme completed in 32 wards successfully. The Poetic singers depicted the enacted Tobacco Act of 2005 with explanations in their songs.
The acts mentioned publications of advt,publicity, leaflets, handbill, posters, banners, billboard are strictly prohibited either in print media, electronic media and open publicity .
On the other hand ,City Corporation also directed the shop keepers situated within the 100 yards of any educational institutions to refrain from selling cigarettes or any other tobacco products .
In another survey of BITA , about 12,165 shops/organsatiions are giving advisements in medias defying the existing laws of the country. Statistics of BITA mentioned , tobaccos are being sold within the 100 yards of 885 educational institutions in the city .
 These Kabials (folk singers) presented a number justifications against the use of tobacco to save the lives of the next generation. They also called people of strata to extend their united efforts to build the city into a tobacco-free city by 2040 as directed by the Prime Minister.
