The number of birth registrations is more than the whole population of the country by one crore. Authorities blamed the weaknesses in birth and death registration for it.
There are various reasons such as dual registration, not canceling the birth registration of the deceased person and abnormal issue of birth registration. Old data is being transferred to new software to solve the crisis. As a result, many people are losing their previous registration information.
According to the Birth and Death Registration Act, registration is mandatory within 45 days of birth. Birth registration certificate is required to get 18 emergency services.
Online birth registration started in the country in 2010. Various crises including weak software and lack of skilled manpower, the same person has the opportunity to register more than once. As a result, the population of the country is about 17 crore, but so far about 18.5 crore births have been registered.
The online birth registration process has started again to eliminate inconsistencies. Those who did not register online have to re-register. It can be seen on the ground that the information of many people registered after 2010 is not available online.
According to UNICEF, an organisation that has been involved with online birth registration since its inception, 56 per cent have registered under the age of five.
The Registrar General (Additional Secretary) of the Birth and Death Registration Office, Mustaqim Billah Farooqi, said the process of refining the Birth and Death Registration Information System was underway. Experts say that if the duality of birth registration associated with different personal certificates is not stopped, there will be a risk.
