Proper conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem can be effective means of preventing thunderbolt that causes
casualties frequently for the last couple of years in the region including its vast Barind tract.
The recent past abnormal declining of biodiversity and ecosystem including falling of big trees like banyan, palm and date might have been the main reason behind rising trend of thunderbolt.
So, there is an urgent need of biodiversity and ecosystem restoration through massive afforestation of native and indigenous trees.
Grassroots farmers and local elites revealed the observation while addressing a view-sharing meeting and workshop titled “Thunderbolt and What can be done to prevent it” at Bil Nepalpara BADC Sub-centre under Paba upazila in the district on Thursday.
Bangladesh Resource Centre for Indigenous Knowledge (BARCIK) organized the meeting in association with Darshanpara Union Disaster Management Committee and Bil Nepalpara Farmers Club. More than 70 farmers both male and female attended the meeting sharing their views on the issue.
BARCIK Barind Regional Coordinator Shahidul Islam addressed the workshop as focal person. President of Bil Nepalpara Ansar Club Murad Ali, retired teacher Asad Ali, public representative Golam Mourtoza and member of union disaster management committee Sultana Khatun also spoke.
The community leaders voiced for time-befitting and effective measures for biodiversity conservation in the Barind tract. They mentioned that
biodiversity is declining abnormally due to various natural and manmade catastrophes triggering natural disasters especially thunderbolt.
Shahidul Islam opined that many native crops and vegetable varieties are gradually declining. Many of the native fish species, particularly the small indigenous ones are on the verge of extinction due to various reasons. So,conservation of natural resources has become indispensable for preventing natural disasters.
Importance should be given to capacity building to address climate change in the region with special reference to conservation of drought tolerant species.
Besides, there should be a campaign and state level interventions to protect the natural resources like native crop seeds, fish and birds species and other wildlife.
