Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said the Bimstec member states are implementing the ‘robust agenda’ as agreed on in Goa to achieve greater connectivity, trade, people-to-people contacts, and sustainable use of resources.
“Bimstec not only connects South and South-East Asia, but also the ecologies of the great Himalayas and the Bay of Bengal,” he said congratulating the citizens of Bimstec member countries on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of its establishment.
Prime Minister Modi thanked the government of Bangladesh for hosting the Secretariat in Dhaka and also thanked the government of Nepal, the current Chair of Bimstec, for its leadership.
“The 20th anniversary provides us a historical opportunity to rededicate ourselves to realising the vast potential of our region,” he said wishing Bimstec all success in its endeavor.
Bimstec was established on June 6, 1997. Bangladesh is one of its members.
The Indian Prime Minister conveyed his felicitations to the fellow citizens of Bimstec, according to Indian Ministry of External Affairs.
Ever since its inception in 1997, Bimstec, representing one-fifth of humanity, has striven to bring benefits of development to its people.
“Today, we’ve one of the fastest growth rates of any region. We’ve made considerable progress, although much more needs to be done,” said Modi.
He said collective resolve to impart fresh momentum to Bimstec has provided hope and optimism.
“With shared values, histories, ways of life, and destinies that are interlinked, Bimstec represents a common space for peace and development. For India, it’s a natural platform to fulfill our key foreign policy priorities of Neighbourhood First and Act East,” he added.
