Biman resumes flight on Barisal-Dhaka route after 8 years

National flag carrier Biman Bangladesh Airlines has resumed its halted flights on Dhaka-Barisal- Dhaka route from Wednesday afternoon, eight-year after suspending domestic flights on this sector on November 16, 2006.
Rashed Khan Menon, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister, who also a native resident of Babuganj upazila, where the Airport situated, inaugurated the flight operation of Biman in this sector by cutting ribbon at the Airport lounge.
Menon delivering a short speech at the Airport said, he fulfilled his promise for resuming Biman flights from Barisal Airport as soon as new aircraft would be available for that. Abdullah Al Jacob, deputy minister, Advocate Talukdar Md. Yunus, Shawkat Hasanur Rahman, AL lawmakers were among the incoming passengers.
Jebunnessa Afroj, AL lawmaker, Advocate Golam Mahmud Tipu, WP lawmaker, received welcomed the incoming passengers at the Airport. Md Hanif Gazi, Aerodrome officer and manager of the airport, said fully loaded 74-seated Dash-8 Q-800 plane from Dhaka touched Barisal Airport at 4:47 PM. It left Barisal at 5:49 PM with 58 passengers including a child, delaying due to flight resuming ceremony.
Biman will operate flights at 4:00 pm from Dhaka-end and at 4:55 pm from Barisal-end on Wednesday and Sunday with one-way fare of Tk.3, 000-4,000 for a 67 aeronautical miles of 30 minutes trip on this route, Khalilur Rahman, Barisal office manager of Biman Bangladesh, informed.
Passenger transportation from and to Airport and Biman office at Barisal city center arranged, Biman official added.
Barisal Airport manager said an Air strip on fifty acres of land was built in late sixties for operating pesticide spraying planes of agriculture department at Rahamatpur under Babuganj upazila on Barisal-Dhaka highway some 17 kilometers away from the city by initiative of Justice Abdur Jabbar Khan, the then speaker of Pakistan parliament, native of the upazila and father of present civil aviation and tourism minister Rashed Khan Menon.
Civil Aviation Authority later acquired more 110 acres of land and constructing 1800 feet long and 60 feet wide runway in 1968 , started operation of STOL (Short Take – Off and Landing) service on Dhaka -Barisal-Dhaka on January of 1971. However STOL service was stopped and runway was heavily damaged during liberation war.
