The Bangladesh Hockey Federation (BHF) appointed Iman Gobinathan of Malaysia as the Head Coach of Bangladesh Hockey team for the upcoming Asian Champions Trophy Hockey, which is scheduled to be held at the Maulana Bhashani National Hockey Stadium from December 14 to December 22. Zahid Hossain Raju will act as the Assistant Coach of Bangladesh Hockey team.
Earlier, former star hockey player of Dhaka Abahani Limited Mahbub Harun was the head coach of Bangladesh Hockey team. He was the coach for hockey team during the gala hockey competition. But Mahbub Harun ruled out himself from his post due to physical complications. Gobinathan is now acting as the coach of Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishthan (BKSP). Zahid Hossain Raju is also working now at BKSP.
The BHF appointed Gobinatnan for interim period. Earlier, Gobinathan also acted as head coach of Bangladesh Hockey team.
The Green Delta Insurance Premier Division Hockey League is ongoing. After ending the hockey competition, Gobinathan will start his coaching camp at BKSP with the players of Bangladesh National squad.
The Asian Champions Trophy was scheduled to held in last year. But due to coronavirus the gala hockey competition will be held from December 14 to December 22.
A total of six teams will take part in the upcoming Asian Champions Trophy. They are: Hosts Bangladesh, India, Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan and South Korea will participate in the Asian Champions Trophy, the most prestigious hockey competition of Asia.
Bangladesh will take on Malaysia on December 14. the hosts will face India on December 15. The red-and-green outfit will meet South Korea on December 16. The home side will play against Japan on December 18. Bangladesh will take on Pakistan on December 19.
The first phase of the hockey meet will be held on Single League basis. Top four teams will play in the semi-finals. The winners of the semi-finals will face each other in the final. The winning team will be the champions of the hockey competition.
