Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) urged the government to ensure steady supply of natural gas with adequate pressure so that smooth production can take place in garment and textile factories.
BGMEA President Faruque Hassan made the call on Wednesday during a meeting with Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited (TGTDCL) managing director Haronur Rashid Mullah at the latter’s office in the capital, according to a statement.
BGMEA Vice President Shahidullah Azim and Titas Gas director (Operation) Md Salim Miah were also present at the meeting.
Quoting Mr Hassan, the statement said, “The interruption in gas supply will disrupt production in various industrial sectors, including spinning, weaving, finishing, dyeing and printing sections in the industrial belts of Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj, Savar, Ashulia, Manikganj, Narsingdi and Chattogram, hampering the export.”
“After going through an unprecedented difficult time, country’s apparel industry is recovering from the pandemic fallout, and global buyers have become more confident about Bangladeshi garment manufacturers’ capacity and commitment to on-time shipments even amid the Covid crisis.”
“But factories will not be able to run in full capacity if gas is not supplied smoothly, making it difficult for the exporters to make shipment on time”, he added, said the statement.
