BGMEA monitoring team to oversee workers’ payment before Eid

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has already formed monitoring teams to oversee the payment of wages and salaries to the workers by the garments owners before the Eid-ul-Fitr.
Some 15 teams are working on behalf of BGMEA under the supervision of convener Riaz-Bin-Mahmud, Vice-President (finance).
The teams will work at Rampura, Khilgaon, Sabujgbagh, Motijheel, Palton, Lalbagh, Dhanmondi, Shahbagh, Newmarket, Mohammadpur, Adabar, Mirpur-1, Darus Salam, Pallabi, Kafrul, Agargaon, Bhashanteck, Cantonment, Tejgaon, Farmgate, Indira Road, Shyampur, Demra, Postagola, Sutrapur, Kadamtali, Gulshan, Banani, Badda, Bhatara Thana, Uttara, Uttarkhan, Dakhin Khan, Turag, Khilkhet, Airport, Ashulia, Ganakbari EPZ, Zirani Bazar, Savar, Nabinagar, Tongi,Sataish Road, Board Bazar, Vogra, Gazipur Chourasta, Gazipur Chourasta to Konabari, Kashimpur, Shafipur, Kaliakour, Tangail, Mymenshing Bhaluka, Narayangonj and Narshingdi.
The BGMEA Vice- President Shahidullah Azim on Saturday told The New Nation that they had already given strict instruction to the owners to pay worker’s salaries and bonus within the given time.
BGMEA have also listed the companies which are at risk of strike. “To prevent such uncomfortable and violent situation, BGMEA has listed the companies with the help of the industrial police and Dhaka Metropolitan police (DMP)”, Shahidullah Azim said.
 For efficient monitoring, BGMEA has already selected eight zones for a special consideration. These are Gazipur, Savar, Ashulia, Bhluka, Konabari, Malibag, Fatullah and Tongi.
Shahidullah Azim said, some 45 companies in Dhaka and 29 in Chittagong have been identified which might not be able to pay salary because of fund crisis. “But we are encouraging them to pay the salary and bonus within the government’s given time and we don’t want to see violence again for salaries before of Eid”, said the BGMEA leader.
The BGMEA has already requested the central bank to keep the commercial banks open on the holiday with a view to withdrawing cas for payment of salary.
The BGMEA has also urged the government to allow the hassle free transportation for the export products during the Eid vacation.
Earlier, the State Minister for Labour and Employment, M Mujibul Haque, on Thursday announced that the readymade garment factory owners will have to pay wages to the workers by July 10 and festival allowances by July 14 ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
“We are trying our level best to pay the salary and bonus of the garment workers in due time, because it our moral duty to disburse their legal rights”, said the BGMEA leader.
