The Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) will observe the Martyrs’ Day today with due solemnity, commemorating the people killed in the Pilkhana BDR carnage on February 25-26 in 2009.
Marking the day, the BGB and army will arrange various programmes. The BGB will arrange Quran Khwani, doa and milad mahfil at all regions, sectors, institutions, units, BOPs and BGB mosques, including the Pilkhana headquarters.
Under the management of army, the representatives of the President and Prime Minister, the home minister, chiefs of three armed forces, senior secretary of the home ministry’s public security division and BGB director general will place wreaths at the Banani military graveyard around 9 am today.
All BGB members will wear black-badge and BGB flag will be hoisted half-mast at the places where BGB regimental flag is hoisted.
On Friday (February 25), a special prayer and milad mahfil will be held at Pilkhana central mosque, Dhaka sector masjid and Border Guard Hospital’s mosque after Jummah prayers seeking salvation of the departed souls of the Pilkhana tragedy martyrs.
Director General of BGB Major General Md Shafeenul Islam, invited guests of the Ministry of Home Affairs, close relatives of the martyrs and all officers of the BGB headquarters will participate in the doa and milad-mahfil abiding by the rules of hygiene and maintaining social distancing amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
On February 25-26, 2009, a group of relegated members of the then Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) killed 74 people, including 57 army officers at the Pilkhana headquarters of the paramilitary force. After the carnage, the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) subsequently was renamed as BGB.
