20-party stages demo: Rally by JCD Shibir held

The BNP-led 20-party alliance on Thursday staged demonstrations by bringing out sudden and brief processions in the capital city and in some districts. They demanded fresh polls under a non-party government system and protested arrest warrant against BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.
Police foiled several processions by charging batons. Consequently, some activists were injured and several others arrested.
Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), the student wing of the BNP, brought out a sudden procession at Paribag in the afternoon. The leaders and the workers of the Dhaka University and the BUET units of the JCD took part in the procession led by JCD central Joint-Secretary Mehbub Masum Shanto. The Jamaat-e-Islam and Islami Chhatra Shibir jointly brought out a procession at Shahjahanpur in the morning.
BNP Joint-Secretary General Salahuddin Ahmed on behalf of the 20-party in a statement last Tuesday announced the countrywide demonstration programme.
Sources said, the 20-party men staged demonstrations in Chittagong, Sylhet, Bogra, Natore, Kurigram and Panchagarh districts.
In Chittagong, the JCD men brought out a procession on the Chittagong
University campus in the morning. Police arrested at least two persons and foiled a procession of the JCD at Natore town. The police intercepted a procession of the BNP at Bonpara under Boraigram upazila by charging batons.
Convener of Boraigram municipality unit of BNP and four others were injured while an activist was arrested from the spot. Police arrested Gurudaspur upazila unit Chhatra Shibir president. In Kurigram, the 20-party alliance brought out a procession in the district at noon defying police obstruction and held a rally on the premise of Muktijuddhya Smriti Falok.
