Better river management for reducing flood risk stressed

Leaders and activists of Riverine People, a voluntary organisation, at a roundtable discussion have laid emphasis on dredging of silted-up beds and better management to increase water carrying capacity of the rivers for reducing flood risk.
They put special emphasis on becoming more careful to the rivers for saving and making those pollution-free amid adverse impacts of changing climate to improve environment, ecology and biodiversity. The Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) unit of Riverine People organised the roundtable styled “Flood Situation: Our Role” at cafeteria in the campus on Thursday in observance of the River Rights Day-2017, a press release said on Friday.
Director of Riverine People and Associate Professor of the Department of Bengali of BRUR Dr Tuhin Wadud presided over the event moderated by teacher of the Department of Accounting and Information Systems Umar Faruk. Environmental activists Professor Shah Alam, Principal Fakhrul Anam Benzu and Dr Mofizul Islam Mantu, Head of the Department of Accounting and Information Systems of BRUR Apel Mahmud and teacher Dr Nittya Ghosh addressed the discussion. Activists of Riverine People Sanjoy Chowdhury, Rokunuzzaman Rajib, Kaniz Fatema, Nurun Nahar, Mohit Mithu, also spoke. The speakers said the government and private sector institutions as well as affluent people in the society should come forward to stand beside the flood-hit people. Umar Faruk said relief was not the ultimate solution and added that proper management of the rivers could substantially reduce the risk of flood and extent of damages.
Dr Tuhin Wadud put importance on conducting regular dredging of the silted-up riverbeds to increase water carrying capacity of the rivers for getting rid of colossal damages from floods.
