Betel-leaf cultivation changes Rajshahi farmers’ fate

The growers under six upazilas across Rajshahi region have become self-reliant and successful through betel- leaf farming. Many farmers bringing out a radical change in their life by earning preferable profit cultivating it.
Witnessing massive success, farmers have become more encouraged to cultivate betel leaf this year. Due to water logging caused by rain, some diseases of the plant in root, leaf and steam cause a huge loss to the farmers every year. But this year over all conditions of their gardens are well. They are now passing busy time in taking care of their gardens.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, the farmers have brought a total of 1,821 hectares of land under betel leaf cultivation this year with the production target of 34,954 metric tons which worth about Tk 90 to 100 crore.
However, there are more than 25,000 betel leaf gardens were found at present in six upazilas- Mohanpur, Paba, Bagmara, Durgapur, Puthia and Charghat of the district.
Around 1, 0000 farmers are involved directly with the betel leaf cultivation and lead their livelihood smoothly.
During a recent visit at Mougachi, a renowned betel- leaf market of the Mohanpur upazila, it was found that per poya (32 bari equal to one poya) of small size betel leaf is being sold at Tk 500 to 800. The middle size is being sold at Tk 1,600 to 2,000 and the big size is at Tk 2,500 to 3,600.
Rahamat Sheikh, farmer of Mougachi village under Mohanpur upazila, said that a farmer can earn a lot of amount cultivating betel leaf if there is no happened any root and branch diseases.
Even it is easy method than other crops cultivation, he also added.
Mokbul Hossain, another betel leaf businessman said Rajshahi’s betel leaf has gaining popularity as its taste. Besides, the farmers has been earning huge amount to export betel leaf in foreign countries including Saudi Arabia, UK and other Middle East Countries across the world. Now, all of farmers demand a betel leaf research centre for getting more facilities and promoting the betel leaf cultivation across the Rajshahi region, he also added.
In reply to a question, AKM Monjure Mowla, a agriculture employee of Paba upazila said to the New Nation that we have been providing different suggestions and training over betel leaf farming for the farmers. Besides, we have already informed the government about the farmer’s demands to set up a betel leaf research centre in this region. We hoped that a positive feedback from the government will come immediately in this regard, he also added.
