Meat sellers have increased the price of beef ignoring Dhaka South City Corporation’s (DSCC’s) fixed rate.
“We learned that the DSCC authorities have fixed beef price at Tk 450 per kg for the month of Ramzan. But the sellers are selling it at Tk 500 per kg,” said Arif Hossain at Jurain Market on Friday.
He said, it is too costlier for the middle-income
people to buy beef at a so high price.
The same scenario was found in Gendaria Bazar, Dayaganj Bazaar, Khilgaon, Malibagh, Shantinagar, Kaptan Bazar and other kitchen markets in the city.
The sellers are selling beef at Tk 480 to Tk 500 per kg in the city’s markets. But the price charter hanged there reads beef price as Tk 450 in every beef shops.
When asked, a meat seller from Jurain Bazar wishing not to be named said, “The city corporation has fixed the price of its own, but how can we sell the beef without profit? It is our business, we need to make profit to maintain our family.”
Another meat sellers at Dayaganj Bazar also preferring anonymity said, “We sell beef with little margin of price. We also avoid mixing buffalo meat or rotten meat. We sell solid beef. That is why we charge some extra money.”
Mentionable, the DSCC on May 14 fixed the maximum prices of beef and mutton at Tk 450 and Tk 720 per kilogram respectively, ahead of the holy month Ramazan.
In addition, the price of buffalo meat was fixed at Tk 420 and local lamb at Tk 600, making them Tk 20 per kg cheaper compared to last year.
But the meat sellers ignored the fixed price rates, especially in beef price, since the first day of Ramazan.
The consumers from different kitchen markets have expressed anger over the increased price of beef.
They demanded proper market surveillance and control of the price of everything as well meat.
