Bean cultivation is gaining ground in Narsingdi district, successful yield of bean brings substantial amount of money to the farmers.
A large number of farmers of Narsingdi district have involved them selves in been cultivation in the recent times considering its economic aspect farmers usually cultivate bean on abandoned lands and on the premises of their houses many farmers are used to cultivate bean on commercial basis.
According to Agriculture Extension Department [AED] 3500 hectares have been brought under bean cultivation in the Narsingdi district, Many farmers have changed their Lot by growing bean, this correspondent visited different areas of Shibpur, Belabo, Raipura, Palash, Narsingdi Sadar and Monohardi Upazila recently and saw farmers are working in their bean fields with much enthusiasm, According to bean farmers, four to five thousand taka is needed to cultivate bean on one bighaof land, Sowing of bean needs begins at the end of Bangla month of Ashar, but the full season begins from Kartik. At the beginning of the season, bean is sold at exorbitant prices. Gradually the prices come down with adequate supply.
According to a farmer of Haron-ur-Rashid of Bharoter Kandi village of Shibpur Upazila said five to six mounds of bean might be plunked from a bigha of land in a week. During the whole season, bean may be plucked 80 to 90 times from a land. Most of the farmers termed bean as a profitable vegetable. Excessive raid and Rain are the main enemies of the vegetables.
Hormoja Baguam wife of Haris Miah, a farmer of Bharoter kaindi village in Shibpur upazila said, “I have planted beans expending Tk 20,000 on one bigha of land and I am expecting to earn at least Tk 80,000 by selling the produce.”
