The bodies of three tourists, who went missing in the Bay of Bengal on Thursday, were recovered from Banshbaria Sea Beach at Sitakundu of Chattogram district on Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Saiful Islam, 24, son of Md Kuddus of Mirsharai upazila in Chattogram; and Md Alauddin, 20, son of Tajul Islam and Md Yasir, 18, son of Md Shahjahan, of Chandpur district. All are employees of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC).
Divers recovered the bodies between 1:00pm and 1:30pm yesterday, reports our local correspondent quoting Wasi Azad, Station Manager at Sitakundu Fire Station.
The three went missing in the Bay of Bengal while a group of around 22 youths went to visit Banshbaria Sea Beach point at Sitakundu yesterday afternoon.
Saiful and Kuddus were employees of Chattogram City Corporation while Yasir was a worker at a printing press in the Port City, the station manager informed.
The local people have termed the Banshbaria Sea Beach a ‘death trap’ as bodies of several visitors have been recovered from the Bay of Bengal near the Beach in recent times.
On June 21, two youths — Shafayet Hossain Raz and Nazmul Hasan Emon — went missing in the same area and their bodies were
recovered on the following day.
Earlier, five bodies were also recovered from the same area in last two months.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner of the Chattogram has issued bar on visitors and locals to take bath in the beach.
Quoting the locals, Tarikul Alam, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Sitakundu, told The New Nation on Saturday that the local administration has put a signboard at the spot asking visitors to avoid the place.
The UNO said they took the decision as many visitors went missing from the beach recently and later their bodies were recovered.
A businessman said, local Awami League leader M A Kashem Raza has started the beach. He did not take any permission from the Local Admintration since 2009.
