BD to face daunting task on final day

Bangladesh will face daunting task on the fifth and final day today to save the first Test as they scored 81 for the loss of three wickets in the second innings against Sri Lanka on the fourth day at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong on Saturday. Bangladesh trailed by 119 runs from Sri Lanka remaining seven wickets.
Earlier, Sri Lanka declared their first innings making 713 for the loss of nine wickets on the fourth day.
Electing to bat first, Bangladesh piled up a massive total of 513 on the second day (Thursday).
Sri Lanka scored 504 for the loss of three wickets before the bails were drawn for the third day on Wednesday.
Roshen Silva and Dinesh Chandimal resumed their first innings with the over-night score of 87 and 37 runs respectively.
Later, Roshen and Chandimal could add more 46 runs together in the fourth wicket stand on the fourth day before Roshen was caught behind by wicketkeeper Liton Das off Mehdi Hasan Miraz when the islanders’ total was 550 for the loss of four wickets.
Roshen Silva knocked a patient 109. His 230-ball innings was laced with six fours and a sixer. It was Roshen’s maiden Test century.
After Roshen’s dismissal, Chandimal and Niroshan Dickwella contributed together 63 runs for the fifth wicket partnership before Chandimal was bowled out by Taijul Islam when Sri Lanka’s score was 613 for the loss of five wickets.
Chandimal hit a captain’s knock of 87. His 185-ball innings saw three fours. It was Chandimal’s 16th Test half century.
After Chandimal’s departure, Dickwella and Dilruwan Perera added together 50 runs in the sixth-wicket stand before Dickwella was caught behind by wicketkeeper Liton Das off Mehedi Hasan Miraz when the tourists’ total was 663 for the loss of six wickets.
Dickwella made 62 from 61 balls featuring nine fours. It was Dickwella’s eighth Test half century.
Fifth-down Dilruwan (32) was trapped leg before wicket by Sunzamul Islam when Sri Lanka’s score was 687 for the loss of seven wickets.
Number-9 batsman Suranga Lakmal (9) was cleanly bowled out by Taijul Islam when the touring side’s total 706 for the loss of eight wickets.
Sixth-down Rangana Herath (24) was trapped leg before wicket by Taijul Islam before Sri Lanka declared their first innings.
Taijul Islam and Mehedi Hasan Miraz were the successful bowlers for Bangladesh on the fourth day.
Taijul captured four wickets at the cost of 219 runs, while Mehedi Hasan Miraz claimed three wickets instead of 174 runs.
Later, Bangladesh made a modest start as openers Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes added together 52 runs before Imrul (19) was caught at the square leg by Dinesh Chandimal off Dilruwan Perera.
Tamim Iqbal hit a polished 42. He hits six fours in his 62-ball innings before he was caught behind by wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella off Laksan Sandakan when Bangladesh’s score was 76 for the loss of two wickets.
Dependable batsman Mushfiur Rahim (2) was caught at the silly point by Kusal Mendis off Rangana Herath before the two umpires drew the bails.
Mominul Haque was on 18 at the close of the fourth day of play. Laksan Sandakan, Dilruwan Perera and Rangana Herath took one wicket each for three, 20 and 22 runs respectively.
