BD struggle, Lanka make 222 on 1st day

Bangladesh struggled on the first day of the second Test with 56 for the loss of four wickets in the first innings against Sri Lanka at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the city’s Mirpur on Thursday.
Earlier, Sri Lanka made 222 in the first innings on the first day.
Bangladesh had a shaky start as the opener Tamim Iqbal (4) was caught and bowled by Suranga Lakmal when Bangladesh’s score was just four.
One-down Mominul Haque (0) was run out by a joint effort of Dhananjaya de Silva and wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella when the hosts’ total was four for the loss of two wickets.
Second-down Mushfiqur Rahim (1) was cleanly bowled out by Suranga Lakmal when the home side’s score was 12 for the loss of three wickets.
Opener Imrul Kayes (19) was trapped leg before wicket by Dilruwan Perera when Bangladesh’s total was 45 for the loss of four wickets.
Liton Das remained unbeaten with 24, while Mehedi Hasan Miraz with five.
Lakmal bagged a pair of wickets at the cost of 15 runs, while Dilruwan Perera took one wicket instead of 25 runs.
Experienced left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak, promising left-arm spinner Taijul Islam and left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman played the key role in demolishing Sri Lankan innings for a modest total. Abdur Razzak, Taijul Islam captured four wickets each for 63 and 83 runs respectively, while Mustafizur Rahman bagged a couple of wickets instead of 17 runs.
Sri Lanka had a poor start as opener Dimuth Karunaratne (3) was stumped out by wicketkeeper Liton Das off experienced left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak when Sri Lanka’s score was 14.
Then opener Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva repaired the damage adding together 47 runs for the second wicket partnership before Dhananjaya (19) was caught by Sabbir Rahman off Taijul Islam when the tourists’ total was 61 for the loss of two wickets.
Kusal Mendis and Danushka Gunathilaka added together 35 runs in the third wicket stand before Gunathilaka (13) was caught at the mid-off by Mushfiqur Rahim off Abdur Razzak when the islanders’ score was 96 for the loss of three wickets.
Abdur Razzak bowled out Dinesh Chandimal for a duck in his next delivery when the touring side’s total was 96 for the loss four wickets.
Abdur Razzak bowled out Kusal Mendis when Sri Lanka’s score was 109 for the loss of five wickets.
Kusal Mendis top-scored with 68. His 98-ball innings was laced with 10 fours and a sixer.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Niroshan Dickwella (1) was bowled out by Taijul Islam when Sri Lanka’s total was 110 for the loss of six wickets.
After Dickwella’s removal, Roshen Silva and Dilruwan Perera put on together 52 runs for the seventh wicket partnership before Dilruwan (31) was caught at the silly point by Mominul Haque off Taijul Islam when Sri Lanka’s score was 162 for the loss of seven wickets.
Roshen Silva hit a calm 56. His 124-ball innings saw three fours and a sixer.
After Dilruwan’s dismissal, Roshen Silva and Akila Dhananjaya added together 43 runs before Dhananjaya (20) was caught at the cover by Mushfiqur Rahim off Mustafizur Rahman when Sri Lanka’s total was 205 for the loss of eight wickets.
Rangana Herath (2) was caught at the short cover by Mushfiqur Rahim off Mustafizur Rahman when the tourists’ score was 207 for the loss of nine wickets.
Roshen Silva was caught behind by wicketkeeper Liton Das off Taijul Islam when the touring side’s innings came to an end.
