The Bangladesh government has requested information on 371 users through 241 requests made to Facebook from January to June this year.
Of these, 142 were legal process requests and 99 were emergency requests, the social media company said in its latest transparency report.
In response to the government’s requests,
Facebook provided some data in 44% of the cases.
According to the social media giant, the number of requests the Bangladesh government has made seeking information on Facebook users has increased.
In the second half of 2019, the government sought information on 298 users through 179 requests and Facebook responded in 45% of the requests.
The rise in request for information on users by governments is not exclusive to Bangladesh.
The number of total requests made to Facebook seeking information on users or accounts in the first six months of 2020 was 173,592. The number was 140,875 and 128,617 in the last and first six months of 2019 respectively.
The United States made the highest 61,528 requests in the first six months this year. The country sought information on 106,114 users or accounts through those requests and Facebook responded in 88% of these cases.
Regarding the requests for account or user information, Facebook states: “Facebook responds to government requests for data in accordance with applicable law and our terms of service. Each and every request that we receive is carefully reviewed for legal sufficiency and we may reject or require greater specificity on requests that appear overly broad or vague.”
